About the data
California Contractor Lookup is an independent site that makes the state's public contractor records easier to search and understand. It isn't run by or affiliated with the State of California.
Where the records come from
Every license on this site comes from the public data files of the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB):
- The license master file: every license that is current or expired but still renewable, with its classifications, status, city, county and ZIP code, issue and expiration dates, bonds and workers' compensation coverage.
- The personnel file: the owners, officers and qualifying individuals currently listed on each license.
We refresh both every week. The date of the latest update is at the bottom of every page. The state's own system can be more current, so always confirm on the CSLB license check before you hire.
What the statuses mean
- Active: the license is current in the state's file.
- Suspended: the state's file lists the license as suspended. We show the reason the file gives, such as a lapsed bond, no workers' compensation, an unpaid judgment or no qualifying individual.
- Flags: notes from the state's file on an active license, such as a pending case or citation, a probationary license, a disciplinary bond, or a suspension that will take effect unless the holder acts.
What isn't included
- Licenses that were cancelled, revoked or expired too long ago to renew. The state's file leaves them out; the CSLB license check still shows them.
- Disciplinary history (citations and accusations). The CSLB doesn't publish it as a data file, so each card links to the license's page on CSLB.ca.gov, where it's listed.
- Street addresses, phone numbers, policy and bond numbers. We show city, county and ZIP code only.
- Former names of people on a license. We show each person's current name as the state lists it.
- Home improvement salesperson registrations and city or county business licenses.
Corrections
This site mirrors the state's records and doesn't change them. If your own record is wrong, contact the CSLB to correct it, and the change will appear here after our next weekly update. For a problem with how this site shows a record, email admin@californiacontractorlookup.com.
